Retail Idiocy

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Does anyone else beside me think it's absolute insanity in this economy to offer handbags costing over $90 each at "buy one get one 1/2 off?"

Who can even afford to buy ONE?!?!

Who's retail genius thought this one up?

Sorry, it just pissed me off.

A Bad Day for Pop Icons

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I posted about Farrah Fawcett previously, when I was in high school, she was who you wanted to be if you were a girl, and who you wanted to ...y'know...if you were a boy. And she turned out to be a talented actress (Burning Bed).

And you can say what you want about MJ - he was an eccentric little freak who may or who may have not been a child molester, but he used to be really talented. I loved, and will always love watching his music videos. This was very unexpected. I wonder what the autopsy will turn up.

Both died too young, that's for sure.

Angels & Demons

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I saw Angels & Demons today, I thought it was great, very fast moving, exciting, suspenseful, well acted, well written, beautiful historic backgrounds. Two thumbs up.

And half a thumb just for Ewan McGregor in his sexy cassock. :)

E-Harmony

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I just want to say that I think E-Harmony is a fraud.

I joined for 3 months. I never even got one email from anyone I was interested in. They sent me very few matches and the ones I contacted didn't write back, which leads me to think that some of them were probably not even paying members. If you don't pay - you can't see pictures, and who's going to contact someone when they can't see what they look like? Stupid.

And if they don't have any matches for you, after a while they start sending you people who SORT OF match - and if that's the case, isn't that defeating the whole point of the website?

NOW, a few days after my paying membership is up - they just happen to send me 4 matches, which of course I can't see their pictures or contact because I'm not a paying member any more. I told them not to send me any more matches.

If you see those free E-Harmony weekends advertised on TV - don't go for it. Yeah, you can contact members and get matched with people, but you can't see their pictures. You have to pay for that priviledge.

So if you're thinking about doing it - DON'T do it. The way the economy is now, I'm sure you have better things to spend your money on.

Anti-Semitism

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
An 88 year old anti-semetic white supremacist walked into the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and started shooting.

I'm not going to dignify his name here - but I read a post he submitted to a white supremacist Holocaust-denying website at the end of May, and it ended with "die whitey".

There is supposedly very heavy security at this museum. How did this man with a pretty large rifle type gun get into this place at all?

And he's 88 years old, all of a sudden he's mad enough to kill people?

I think a security guard was killed, I'm not sure if anyone else has died.

Last month four radical Muslims tried to blow up a Jewish temple in the Bronx.

I just don't fucking get it.

Star Trek

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I saw Star Trek today.

Good things:
Actors pretty much nailed their characters
Great special effects
Nice eye candy

Bad things:
Convoluted time-travel plot
Out of a two hour movie, Jim Kirk spends 1 hour and 45 minutes of it in danger, it gets wearing.
Star Trek movies don't need choirs singing in the background music, that's for cheesy horror flicks.

It was entertaining for two hours - but I could have done without it.
*SPOILER AFTER PICTURE BELOW*

BIG ERROR - They killed off Spock's mother?!?!!? Didn't they watch the series? She was very much alive!!!

One Year Ago

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So a year ago this time TLB moved out. Haven't heard from him since early December when he called me (get this) to ask for directions to somewhere upstate. Still has stuff in my storage, which, let's face it, is mine now to do with what I want. It's so sad that he didn't even care enough about his limited edition Star Trek Christmas ornaments and all the camping equipment he spent a ton of money on to come and get them. It's absolutely tragic that after three years he doesn't even give enough a shit about me to just call and see how I am. He probably figures I would yell at him or something. I hope any new girlfriend he has sees him for what he is quicker than I did.

My last date was in February. The guy ended up standing me up on Valentine's Day. I think that was probably the last straw. I've been looking around online but my heart just isn't in it. Hopefully some day I will feel differently.

This coming holiday weekend I have to get up at 7:30 on Saturday to attend a Bar Mitzvah at a conservative temple for two twin cousins I haven't seen since they were 3. The only good thing is I will get to see my parents and a few relatives I haven't seen in a while. The invitation came with a list of rules about what NOT to do or wear in the temple. I feel like showing up in a mini skirt and tank top.

My fridge is dying, had to get a new one. My washer is leaking, will have to get a new one. My bedroom air conditioner is on it's last legs as well. I'm hoping it will make it through one more summer. This is nothing surprising, all the appliances I have are pretty old. But it's all happening at once.

Work is very slow. I don't think I'll get fired but a few other people might. My two co-workers can't even pay their mortgages right now (they decreased our salaries by 20% in February).

I am reading some good books. Still reading Churchill's memoirs of WW2 (it's LONG), Henry IV part 2, the graphic novel "V is for Vendetta" (was a movie with Natalie Portman) and a Shakespeare trivia book which is pretty interesting.

I need something to look forward to and I don't think Half Blood Prince is really enough!!

Happy Earth Day!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I am doing absolutely nothing to celebrate Earth Day but I do want to recognize it. :)

I am reminded of George Carlin's routine where he said something like, (and I'm paraphrasing) "everyone wants to save the planet...the planet is going to be FINE it's just a big rock, it's US that won't be here!"

Some Things

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I saw Hair on Broadway on Saturday, it was great, good cast, a lot of energy, really fun, with an anti-Vietnam war message that didn't lose it's punch after all these years. The songs are terrific.

I saw Susan Boyle sing on You Tube and thought she was bloody amazing, which is saying a lot being that I don't usually like that kind of music.

I also saw the Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince trailers on You Tube, I think it's going to be great. Dark, scary, suspenseful, and great.

I was looking up some trivia on The Matrix and they mentioned that the cast was all made to read book called Simulacra & Simulation by Jean Baudrillard, (it's also shown briefly in the movie - where Neo hides his computer discs at the beginning) which I immedately went out and got and started reading. Extremely fascinating - really hard to read and I don't agree with everything he says, but the concepts are really intense.

I trimmed Ernie's nails today being that he was starting to put holes in my carpet, my furniture, my bedding, and more importantly, me.

The Yankees had an embarrassing loss on Saturday, 22 - 4 for God sakes, but I think they redeemed themselves today. I don't think Girardi is long for this team.

Here's my favorite Yankee of all time - Tino Martinez.

April 5th, 2009

Because I think one is being called home.

Farrah Fawcett was admitted into an LA hospital, she has cancer, she is dying. She is a totally underrated actress (if you saw The Burning Bed, you know what I mean), not to mention one of the most beautiful women and icon of the 70's. I used to watch Charlie's Angels just to see what she was wearing. I always tried to get my hair to look like hers (and failed miserably). This poster was on every kid & teenager's bedroom wall (boys and girls) and was one of the best selling pin-ups ever. Although her personal life is sketchy and troubled, I think she is beautiful & talented, it's a horrible thing she has to live through.

Beatlefest

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So because of the economy, not so crowded this year. But I enjoyed myself. Got to watch The Rutles (as Neil Innes was a special guest), and also met Victor Spinetti, who all you British people know and any American who isn't a Beatles fan has NO IDEAR. I bought his book, and he autographed it for me, very nice man, and he gave a great talk, with Q&A afterward. Very personable person. I'm about 3/4 through his book, he has had an extremely interesting life, if the book is to be believed. I wish I was British though because he talks about a lot of people that I'm sure are quite famous over THERE...but over HERE...have NO IDEAR.

Also bought a t-shirt (had to), saw some great photographs and memorabilia, and hung out with people I hadn't seen in a really long time. So it was fun.

Now back to your regularly scheduled journal.

The Watchmen

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I just saw The Watchmen. Weird. Violent. Sexy. More weird.

I didn't read the graphic novel it's based on, so I can't tell you how faithful they were to the original story. But it was really weird. Jackie Earl Haley (yes the same guy that was the punk kid in Bad News Bears) was excellent, he was my favorite. The naked blue guy...not so much. Good, original story.

Did I mention it was weird?

Before the movie I saw two trailers that looked great - Johnny Depp & Christian Bale in Public Enemies, and Christian Bale in the new Terminator. Some things to look forward to. I think Christian Bale is going for the "how many movies can I be in in the shortest time" record.
